What is Active Release Techniques®?

Active Release Techniques® (A.R.T.) is a soft tissue management system that is so unique, it has been granted a patent. As the name implies, A.R.T. uses movement to treat problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly with A.R.T. Particularly useful in treating injured athletes — students, weekend warriors, professionals at the top of their game — these conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.

Active Release Techniques

Over-used muscles (and other soft tissues) change in three important ways:

  • Acute conditions (injuries);
  • Accumulation of small tears (using the same muscle groups over and over); and
  • Not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia – from sitting a great deal, as in a car, or your desk, or on the couch).

Each of these factors can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons causes tendonitis, and nerves can become trapped. This may cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. When a nerve becomes trapped, you may experience tingling, numbness, and weakness.

What is an A.R.T. treatment like?

Every A.R.T. session is actually a combination of examination and treatment. At Atlantic Medicine & Wellness, Dr. Peter Aloi uses his hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific, patient movements. Treatment duration and frequency varies depending on the severity and complexity of the injury, but most of our patients experience rapid recovery.
