Atlantic Medicine & Wellness Help Center – F.A.Q
Sometimes medicine and wellness services can get a little confusing. Below are some questions that clients and customers have frequently asked our professionals.
Allergy
Our process for allergy testing consists of a suite of sophiscated diagnostic tools from precise environmental testing to food allergy testing. In addition, we conduct a “multi-test” skin exam that tests for 52 allergens local to our New Jersey shore communities. Once the specific allergen(s) are identified, we are able to successfully treat the symptoms with our immunotherapy program. All of our testing and immunotherapy is FDA approved.
We also offer a comprehensive blood test that will screen for latent sensitivities of up to 600 foods, common chemical irritants, and other compounds. Knowing which foods and chemicals to avoid can be nothing short of life-changing for those suffering from these symptoms.
Learn More About: Allergy Testing
Allergy skin tests are used to identify a number of potential allergens that can be affecting your body. This may include airborne, food/diet-related, and contact allergens. In order to thoroughly test for allergies, there are three types of skin tests:
- Scratch Test
- Intradermal Test
- Patch Test
Typically, a scratch test is the initial test that is performed for most patients. During this exam, an allergen is placed within a liquid. The doctor will then place that liquid on a section of your skin with a special tool that will gently puncture the allergen into the surface of your skin. Once that process is complete, the doctor will closely monitor your skin to observe the reaction against the foreign substance. As a result, if there is any redness, swelling, elevation, or itchiness, there is a strong indication that your body is allergic to that allergen.
Sometimes a scratch test may be inconclusive and your physician will perform an intradermal skin test. This type of test requires injecting a concentrated amount of the allergen into the dermis layer of your skin. Similarly to the scratch test, your doctor will observe and monitor the reaction to the foreign substance to determine if you are allergic.
The patch test (TRUE test) involves using adhesive patches that are placed on your body for 2-4 days. Your doctor will review the patches 48 hours after the application, 72 hours after the application, and once more 96 hours after the application.
In certain circumstances, if you experience a severe allergic reaction to any of the skin tests, your doctor may recommend a blood test..
